Pippin Process

Pippin was the first full production I designed costumes for. There is a line in the final song that goes “They showed me crimson, gold, and lavender.” I used this line as my color palette for the show. The director’s concept for the show was that the Lead Player is the devil trying to get Pippin’s soul and the other players represent the Seven Deadly Sins. I reflected this with accent colors in each players’ costume/makeup to represent their respective sin. To create the various patterns on the players’ leotards and corsets, I used stencils to hand paint them on with fabric paint. I also painted/decorated several masks some of the animal characters the players take on. For act two, their costumes become distressed as the magical facade is fading and the players are being revealed as demons. I used a combination of cutting, burning, and painting their costumes to distress them.
